How to Study and Conquer Any Medical School Exam?

In medical school, it felt like we were always just studying; whether it was a quiz, exam, shelf, or board exam, we were studying. There were so many days I honestly did not want to study; the adventures of the world sounded a lot more fun than studying, but the sacrifice and discipline of studying consistently helped me achieve my goals of scoring well on all three USMLE board exams, graduating medical school, and achieving a residency. Therefore, it was totally worth it.

People always say just study, and you will do well, but how does one really study to do well on their exams? There’s so much material, and most likely very little time before your upcoming exam and juggling other extracurriculars, research, and well-being.

Here are the ways I studied for an exam and have been able to significantly improve over time with these methods. If you are a reader, you may not like watching videos or listening to podcasts, and that’s OKAY; EVERY single person studies in their own way and does what’s best for them. These are the ways that have helped me after MANY trials and errors.

A separate blog post with much more detail for each one will be upcoming days to come!

Approaching residency, I am grateful I have studied so much over the years because now, it’s not just for an exam but actually for the patients I will be treating. That’s still unbelievable to me that I will assist in making clinical decisions for patients in a few short months. But we are staying present in the moment, which is today, helping medical students succeed through medical school.
